Barra Grande is the biggest village of Marau. Because of its location at Maraú Peninsula, it's possible to access the place through Camamu bay, by the Atlantic Ocean or overland, through BR-030 (road). Barra Grande beach is an amazing place and has 2 km of extension full of reefs, natural pools and sandbank vegetation. The place owns a distinct quality on its touristic structure compared to others villages.
How to get there - Aerial The closest airport to Maraú is situated in Ilhéus. The closest international airport is located in Salvador. Flights to Barra Grande: There's a runway near to Barra Grande village that small aircraft can land. Visitors might also take a flight from Salvador, but only three times per week (monday, wednesday and fridays). The flight lasts about 25 minutes. - Sea Camamu is a 2-hour-drive from Salvador by ferry-boat system and the BA-001 (road). In the port of Camamu there are two transportation options to Barra Grande and Taipus: simple boats and motor-boats. Simple boats are cheaper, but it takes an hour and a half to get to Barra Grande. The boarding place of Camamu in Ponte Grande, near to the handicrafts market. Motor-boats Tourism agencies from Camamu and Barra Grande provide motor-boat services and tranfers from the airports. The boat crossing takes about 20 minutes. The boarding local of Camamu is at Ponte Menor, near to the bus stop. - Overland By car: for those who come from Salvador, the best option is going by the ferry-boat system to Bom Despacho, on the island of Itaparica, and go through BA-001 (road) until Camamu. Then, there are two choices: around the bay by keeping on BA-001 and BR-030 or leaving your car in a parking lot in Camamu and take a boat to Barra Grande. Coming from Ilhéus, the best way is the new section of the BA-001 (road) that was just built between Itacaré and Camamu. The intersection with BR-030 (road) is 15 km after Itacaré. By the BR-030: the BR-030 is a dirt road over 50 km that leads to the village of Campinho, north of Maraú Peninsula. To go to Taipus de Fora and Barra Grande is necessary to leave the BR-030 and turn right 1 km after the lighthouse, 6 km before Campinho. Attention! There is no sign of Taipus de Fora or Barra Grande, just signs indicating hotels. A dirt road can become impractical for some cars if there are long periods of rain, so it is recommended to get some information about the BR-030 before driving there. By Bus: several companies operate between Bom Despacho and Camamu hourly. The journey time is approximately 5 hours. The company Cidade Sol is the most appropriated because it is faster and make the direct path. There are also buses to Camamu leaving from Ilhéus, Itabuna and other cities.
